2019 BIENNALE OF ART: MONGOLIA

Between the many venues scattered across the sea and canals of Venice, Mongolia tucks into a few small spaces on the ground floor of the Bruchium Fermentum in Calle del Forno (150 meters from the entrance of the Arsenale towards the Campiello Tana and Fondamenta della Tana). Here, space and sound are fused, mutating sense of scale with a sculptural installation from Jantsankhorol Erdenebayar (Jantsa), accompanied by the musical arrangements of Carsten Nicolai, better known as Alva Noto. The exhibit, curated by Gantuya Badamgarav, shows under the title A Temporality, and was commissioned to the artist with the intent to spark a dynamic dialog amidst the cramped and interconnected halls of the old Venetian home. Meanwhile, Nicolai has also engaged a group of Mongolian singers to transform and translate ancient instruments practicing an oral tradition into a form of contemporary art. The immersive exhibit thus weaves tradition and modernity, past and present, and true and imaginary stories.
